What The Current Energy Tariffs Mean for Battery Storage Systems
The conversation around energy tariffs in South Africa has shifted – and so should our approach to storage.

MyBroadband recently got a tour of Freedom Won’s impressive factory in Edenvale, one of the three biggest battery assembly plants in South Africa.
We are grateful to the South African solar installers and EPCs who participated in Jaltech’s 2024 industry survey and chose Freedom Won as their preferred battery brand.
MyBroadband asked reputable solar power product distributors and installers for their insights on the best brands in the South African market in January 2025.
In a remarkable partnership, Freedom Won provided an eTower and four 12V 100Ah batteries to a group of final-year electrical engineering students in the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering (EECE), at the University of Pretoria (UP) on September 16, 2024.
We are pleased to inform you that Freedom Won has successfully consolidated its distribution model for the South African market.
Freedom Won partnered with the University of Pretoria (UP) to help reduce their reliance on diesel fuel for backup power. UP aims to reduce their carbon footprint as well as operating and maintenance costs relating to the numerous diesel generators on campus.
Traditionally, the university’s final year laboratories and student projects relied on lead acid batteries, until a sponsorship from the LiFePO4 battery manufacturer, Freedom Won, changed the landscape on the 17th of August 2023. The donation of Freedom Won 12V 100Ah batteries and a LiTE 5/4 model marked the inception of a shift towards a lithium iron phosphate-powered laboratory.
From the smallest component through to building a Freedom Won (“FW”) containerised solution – with each step of the way, safety is paramount.
FW, an original equipment manufacturer, is compliant with industry best practices in terms of how to build and manage Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a safe environment and methodology.
South African battery storage pioneer Freedom Won, which is on a rapid, loadshedding-fuelled expansion path, is ramping up production at its newly expanded 15 000 m2 factory in Honeydew, Gauteng, to exceed the current production of 50 MWh of batteries every month – enough energy storage to support around 5 000 South African households in combination with solar power.
In this episode of Driving Sustainability, Antony English (co-founder and co-owner) discusses the highlights and challenges of Freedom Won’s 10-year journey since being founded in 2012.
RECENT PROJECTS
There are no limitations to the power of renewable energy! This is clearly visible in the Louma Boerdery project where an entire 2 500 hectare farm has been taken completely off the grid with another 1000 hectare to be completed soon!
With no end in sight for load-shedding in South Africa, many people are looking for backup power to carry them through the outages.
PRESS RELEASE
This month marks the official 10-year birthday of Freedom Won – a significant milestone for one of the largest manufacturers of energy storage solutions in Africa.

The beautiful Jao Camp based in the pristine Okavango Delta in Botswana was the site of the latest innovation in green energy involving Freedom Won – that of installing the largest Victron off-grid lithium battery system in the world.
Freedom Won were recently bestowed the Bronze Award in the Large Business of the Year 2018/2019 category at the National Chambers of Commerce and FNB Business of the Year Awards. The organisation accepted the prestigious award at a spectacular gala event held on 25th May at Silverstar Casino in Krugersdorp.
Co-founder of Freedom Won, Antony English, was interviewed by Darren Scott and proved to be a natural. Take a listen here to a great interview.

Ever imagined a time where you or your business were never affected by load shedding or a power outage? Freedom Won offers Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) energy storage solutions in an integrated, compact and stylish wall unit for residential, business and industrial use to protect against load shedding and outages.
In February 2015 the first electric Fiat 500 in Africa rolled off the FreedomWON workshop floor to much interest and excitement – for this is FreedomWON’s new small car premium electric conversion design. Premium means the top end of our single charge range and power offering – this extra special Fiat 500, which of course has been named Freedom7, is capable of reaching an electronically limited speed of 160km/hr and a single charge range of 200km!
After all the excitement of the media launch, loading Freedom 3 that night on our trailer and double checking all the tie downs and sitting down with the Freedom Won team, reflecting on the day’s events, myself & Tania finally got a few hours sleep before the long trek of over 1300 km back to Chobe Game Lodge on the banks of Chobe river in North Eastern Chobe National Park, Botswana.
Antony and Lizette readily took up the challenge and towed Freedom1 up to us, all the way from Krugersdorp, a good 1200 km trek. Chobe Game Lodge is an ECO lodge and we have been pursuing zero emission drive trains for our vehicles and boats for a number of years.
At the crack of dawn on Saturday morning, 5 Apr ‘14 the wheels started rolling… Chobe Game Lodge’s GM, Johan Bruwer with Landie TD130 and Game Viewing Boat’s 40hp petrol outboard motor in tow, bit the bullet and started the 2-day trek from Botswana to Freedom Won’s home base in South Africa…
Team-Freedom Won has spent the last six weeks refining the design, producing drawings and managing the specialist engineering fabrication of the Landie’s key conversion components.
